2017 Honda CR-V vs 2017 Ford Escape: which one do you choose?

Sport utility vehicles have surpassed compact sedans when it comes to popularity and sales figures for the segment in Canada in recent years.

Sport utility vehicles have surpassed compact sedans when it comes to popularity and sales figures for the segment in Canada in recent years. This is not necessarily surprising since modern compact SUVs offer more space and versatility than a sedan while requiring less and less compromise in road behavior, performance, and especially fuel economy.

Two models in particular stand out at this level, but they are nevertheless quite different from each other which means that one will be better than the other depending on your needs. For example, if for you fuel economy and versatility are two important criteria, the 2017 Honda CR-V holds a slight advantage over its American rival. Let's take a closer look.

Better power and better fuel economy in the 2017 Honda CR-V

To begin with, the 2017 Honda CR-V has been completely redesigned this year, and offers a new 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine developing 190 horsepower and 179 lb.-ft. of torque. This is the first time that a turbo engine is found under the hood of a Honda CR-V. In spite of its impressive power, this engine is also fuel-efficient with an average fuel consumption rating of only 8.7 liters per 100 kilometers in the city, and 7.2 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway for models equipped with all-wheel drive.

The Ford Escape offers three engines, but two of them are less powerful than the Honda CR-V’s turbo engine and they all have a higher fuel economy rating. For example, the Ford Escape’s 1.5-liter engine offers 179 horsepower, but its fuel consumption rating is set at 10.7 liters per 100 kilometers in the city, and 8.3 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway with all-wheel drive.

More space in the 2017 Honda CR-V than in the 2017 Ford Escape

In addition to its more fuel-efficient engine, the 2017 Honda CR-V offers more space. This is especially true in the trunk where the 2017 Honda CR-V can accommodate 1,110 liters with all seats in place, and 2,146 liters with the rear seat down. The 2017 Ford Escape offers 964 liters with all seats in place, and less than 2,000 liters with the rear seat folded down.
