The Honda Civic Concept surprises everyone in New York

Published on April 10 2015

Last week, Honda surprised the journalists present at the media days of the New York International Auto Show by unveiling a spectacular vehicle, the Honda Civic Concept.

Painted in bright green, the Honda Civic Concept foretells the visual direction of the 2016 Honda Civic, the next generation of the most popular car sold in Canada.

In the automotive industry, it is rare that an automaker manages to keep a secret surrounding the unveiling of a model unveiled at a given auto show. In this case, however, Honda actually managed to cause a surprise with its Honda Civic Concept, a car that is not only beautiful from a design perspective, but also very important for the Japanese manufacturer.

Visually, no one can say that Honda hasn’t worked hard to give the new Honda Civic a unique and engaging style. A collaboration between Honda engineers in Ohio and designers of the brand in California, the Honda Civic Concept offers a longer wheelbase which gives the model more space for passengers inside. It also showcases a lower and wider body that provides a much sportier overall look. Shorter overhangs in front as well as a shorter rear area combined with a longer hood also add a bit more bite to the vehicle.

“The new Civic will be, flat out, the most dynamic, the most technologically advanced and the most refined and stylish Civic we’ve ever made,” said Dave Gardner, senior vice president of operations, Honda Canada Inc. “We couldn’t be prouder to be the global manufacturing lead for this epic vehicle, and they’ll be built by Canadians right here in our renowned Alliston, Ontario facility.”

In addition to unveiling the impressive concept in the Big Apple, Honda also confirmed that the 10th generation of the Honda Civic will be offered in a hatchback version. 2016 will therefore mark a return for the five-door version, which disappeared from the North American market more than 10 years ago. The hatchback version will be available alongside the sedan, coupe and Si which will again be offered in the Civic range when the new generation of the popular vehicle arrives on the market.

An all-new, 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo engine with Earth Dreams technology will also be offered with the new Honda Civic. The latter can be combined with a new automatic continuously variable transmission, or a manual transmission. It should allow the new 2016 Honda Civic to provide the best fuel economy in its history.

A range of Honda Sensing active safety systems will also be on the menu. Features like LaneWatch as well as lane change monitoring, a multi-angle rearview camera, and adaptive cruise control will be included.

The new 2016 Honda Civic will arrive this fall.
